Steven commenced practice as a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers in Perth at the beginning of 2015. Steven’s practice at Francis Burt Chambers has to date included acting in construction and oil and gas arbitrations, advice and representation in disputes relating to breach of contract and misleading and deceptive conduct, shareholder oppression claims, release of security under construction contracts, estate administration and wills, restraint of trade and breach of copyright, as well as Corporations Act prosecutions and liquor licensing applications.
Since gaining accreditation as a mediator in late 2014, Steven has conducted 11 mediations (and in 10 of those, the outcome has been a successful resolution of the matter).
Prior to joining Francis Burt Chambers, Steven’s background was in commercial litigation, with nearly 31 years’ experience as a litigation lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills, with a particular focus on arbitrations (including some of WA’s largest gas price arbitrations), expert determinations, competition law, mining industry disputes, electricity pricing, contractual disputes, automotive, franchising, and real estate disputes.
Steven’s competition law experience includes price fixing, market power and restraint of trade cases, negotiations with the ACCC and preparation of notifications for joint ventures and marketing arrangements, and advice in relation to advertising and misleading and deceptive conduct issues. He was a member of the Competition Committee of the Law Council of Australia for a number of years.
Steven’s experience in liquor licensing includes appearing for a major retailer in various licensing applications and appeals, and representing defendants in prosecutions.
